March 26, 2020On behalf of the HBBE team welcome to the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment. Over the next three years we will be building a new research centre across Newcastle and Northumbria Universities to. We are proposing top strike a new deal with nature by utilizing biotechnology to create a new generation of Living Buildings which are restorative, fertile and resilient. By incorporating living systems these buildings will:
- be responsive to their environment;
- be grown using living engineered materials to avoid harmful industrial construction processes;
- metabolise their own waste, reducing pollution and generating energy and high-value products and modulate their microbiome to benefit human health and wellbeing.
