Congrats to our member Thora Arnardottir to be shortlisted for the Arts and Foundation Future Award in Biodesign 2023

Thora Arnardottir develops approaches to integrating biological systems in the built environment through design methods and innovative biofabrication techniques. During her PhD at the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment, she developed expertise in designing novel fabrication methods that utilise bacterial biomineralisation to form calcified biocomposite materials—centring on the possibility of integrating biotic agency in the expression and formation of the material. Also she co-founded the collective Bio.babes to disseminate and explore how biological interactions affect our design experiences, and Unrulymatters, a start-up focused on design-led biomaterial innovation and biomineralised product development.

The Arts Foundation is a registered charity that supports individual artists and creatives in the UK with unconditional financial fellowships through the Arts Foundation Futures Awards to enable them to concentrate on their creative development, experiment, and realise their artistic potential. The Arts Foundation Bio Design Award supports creative practitioners designing with biomaterials for the environment. Questioning how we accelerate our transition away from extractive and carbon centric design and materials the bio-design award goes beyond environmental sustainability, to include practices and design innovations that work towards symbiosis with nature. The award supports designers and creative practitioners working with materials or service design approaches that are regenerative, with the capacity to restore, renew or revitalise the environment.
