Alive: rhythmic buildings

The OME will be an experimental house built in the heart of the Newcastle University campus, due for completion in Spring 2021. The OME will be where HBBE researchers come together to collaborate, test and demonstrate their technologies at large scale. The OME will be where we showcase our work to the industry and to the public.

The OME will explore the importance of light, water and micro-climates in creating living ‘bio-buildings’. As many of our technologies are at an early stage of development, the OME has been designed as a building within a building: a self-contained apartment protected by a translucent building envelope. This will allow us to freely experiment with materials and processes which may not be ready for full external exposure. The apartment will be situated above a laboratory which will process domestic waste, generating heat and valuable materials. An exhibition space will allow living prototypes to be tested whilst learning about people’s response to, and interactions with, these new materials and systems.
