Congratulations to PhD Candidate and Research Associate Thora H Arnardottir who received succesfully two grants in Iceland (in total around 12.000£) to start to develop ‘biotiles’ with the biomineralization process she developed in her PhD work!

The role of the Design Fund (Hönnunarsjóður) is to promote innovation and value creation in the field of design and architecture with financial support and advice, and facilitate promotion and marketing abroad that enhances the export of Icelandic design.

The Student Innovation Fund (Nýsköpunarsjóður námsmanna) is awarded for research and development projects that are considered likely to promote innovation and increased links between universities, institutions and companies.

Thora's collaborating partner in Iceland is Brynja Gudnadottir who is an interior designer working on an eco-friendly house, Skógarsel, that is an experimental project and first of its kind in Iceland. It is a collaboration between Brynjahonnun, Biotonomy and other Icelandic experts in the construction industry.
Material research is an important factor of that project as indoor materials are crucial to the health of buildings. With this project Thora and her team will be scaling up her biomineral material samples this summer and explore size and shape of the material, textures and patterns with a variety of locally sources (even volcanic) aggregates.
