Responsive Textiles at the Saint Etienne Design Biennale

Responsive Textiles by Jane Scott are on exhibition at the Du sensorial au biomimétisme (Sensory to Biomimicry) exhibition part of The Saint-Etienne International Design Biennale.

Knitted fabrics designed to promote bacterial-textile interactions are on show in the exhibition that runs from April 6 – July 31, 2022.

This fabric collection was developed as part of Fibre Highways, an interdisciplinary collaboration with Molecular Microbiologist Angela Sherry investigating the potential for textiles to promote and guide the movement of bacteria for a new range of biohybrid technologies.

Jane Scott’s research Programmable Knitting is included as a biomimetic strategy informed by the hierarchical organisation of plant tissue and the pinecone hygromorph. This knit-specific system produces a wide variety of moisture-responsive shape-change behaviours engineered into the structure of fabrics composed of 100% natural fibres.

This international exhibition focuses on sustainable and sensitive approaches to the future through design: “From sensory to biomimicry explores the living in a sensitive form, in response to the ecological and societal crisis we are going through. This journey around materials, processes, the sensory and methodologies based on the living invites us to change our gaze for the construction of a more sensitive, complementary and above all sustainable future.” Exhibition Introduction.
