Designing living textile-bacterial hybrids
Paula Nerlich
PhD Candidate
Paula is a PhD candidate at The Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment as part of the The Living Textiles Research Theme group, led by Dr Jane Scott.
In her doctoral research, she explores the synergy of textile design and microbiology to create living textiles that emit curated scents. Her work operates in the realm of "Textile Thinking," a unique approach that considers both the physical aspects of textiles and the intangible world of smells around them. Paula is passionate about bringing different disciplines together to innovate and shape a future where textiles play a vital role in our sensory interactions.
Further involvements at the HBBE include ‘Bio-Futures for Transplanetary Habitats’ and the external ‘Human-Bacteria Interfaces’ project in collaboration with HBBE fellow PhDs, a funded project as part of the Driving the Human call.
PhD supervisors: Dr Jane Scott, Dr Angela Sherry, Prof Ruth Morrow
