BSc Molecular Biology & Biochemistry | MSc Biotechnology Biodesign

Hi! I am originally from Czechia and during most of my previous studies I have concentrated on molecular biology, biochemistry and related techniques. As I am generally more interested in the practical contributions of science to people and the planet my steps naturally lead me to Newcastle University, where I am currently completing a MSc in Biotechnology and Biodesign. My main focus is the development of a clearly labelled biodesigned packaging that would avoid future food wastage.

I have utmost respect for nature and the fact that everything has a clearly defined purpose, logic and wider sense never ceased to amaze me. Trying to live a considerate, sustainable, and zero-waste life became my number one priority. I see the Biodesign Challenge as a natural fit and perfectly logical extension to my study interests but also - more generally - my passion and attitude to living. I believe that the future lies in the ability to live in harmony with nature.

As a biochemist, I am fascinated by the complex world of biology, as understood through the study of proteins. Currently, I am researching the application of protein engineering techniques to biodegradation of microplastics in our waters. By familiarising myself with the exciting new discipline of biodesign, I hope to be able to contribute to the improvement of waste management in urban areas through creative applications of molecular biology.

I am going through a journey of studying how my habits affect communities and the natural environment. I also enjoy learning about microbial interactions through home brewing and fermentation. I was therefore drawn to join the Biodesign Challenge in order to explore creative ways of tackling sustainability issues and promoting bio-circular economy with open-minded and innovative people whom I have had a valuable time learning from.
