Prof Gary Black
Professor of Protein Biochemistry
I am a Professor of Protein Biochemistry at Northumbria University, specialising in the discovery, development, production and analysis of biocatalysis enzymes and their applications for the production of high-value natural products. I have a BSc degree in Applied Biology and a PhD in Molecular Biology / Biochemistry. I have successfully supervised 21 PhD students as principal supervisor and published over 60 peer-reviewed research articles. I am currently a Royal Society Short Industry Fellow and was a core member of the Molecules, Cells and Industrial Biotechnology BBSRC Research Committee from 2014 - 2018. Most of my research involves collaboration with industry, and I am currently working with Proctor and Gamble, Arcinova and Prozomix. I am Technical Director of Nzomics Biocatalysis, a Northumbria University business-facing innovation unit that develops novel enzymes for clients in the pharmaceutical, chemical, biofuel and food sectors.
