Even though mycelium may not be as strong as a conventional brick, that shouldn’t discourage us. For example, the 40 feet high Hy-Fi tower proved that construction of tall mycelium buildings is more than achievable.
The Growing Pavilion further showed us that mycelium can provide us with a multi purpose entertainment venue. These two projects gave us confidence to use mycelium as a medium to reach out to the community in a sustainable manner.
We want to give people the opportunity to decide about their local environment and give them the responsibilities. Many past projects showed us that the community is willing to become engaged when it is their ideas in question.
We chose to stem the network from our immediate environment and that is why we looked into abandoned locations in Newcastle. Interestingly, we encountered an extensive list of publicly and privately owned decrepit properties. In collaboration with the community forum, we could hear out community needs and contact the city council to direct the repurposing of the site accordingly. Once a plan for restoration is devised it is time for the mushrooms to show their magic. A mycelium farm will appear and open its doors to the curious locals.
