“Our mission is for the collaboration of biotechnology, architecture and design to create a new ‘kitchen’ concept – the Culina experience.

We unearth traditional and lost processes of growing, cooking and eating food together – reshaping them with modern day biotechnologies and designs for a future of self-sustenance”.

We have developed a biodesign concept exploring the synthetic biology behind animal-free protein production, hydroponic systems for sustainable agriculture and traditional cooking methods such as fermentation. Encompassing these processes is an architectural construct which redefines the ‘kitchen’ construct. It embraces natural and synthetic elements, human and non-human bodied organisms, to attain an ecological way of living in the built environment.

Architecture plays a huge role in the function of society and a fundamental bearing on humanity’s future but only if a more ecological approach is developed for application to the built environment. The kitchen is an integral part of our built environment. From the food we eat to the people we eat it with, the experience should be good for you and the planet.

The Culina team believes our approach to re-envisioning the everyday experiences we have with food has the potential to rebuild the food economy and achieve self-sustenance through ecological design.
