We are recruiting a Research Assistant/Associate who will lead the design, specification, testing and application of new materials which are being developed by bio-scientists within the Hub.

The successful candidate will join The Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment: an exciting new collaboration between Newcastle University and Northumbria University supported by £8M of research funding. Our vision is to develop biotechnologies to create a new generation of Living Buildings which are responsive to their natural environment; grown using living engineered materials to reduce inefficient industrial construction processes; metabolise their own waste, reducing pollution and generating energy and high-value products, and modulate their microbiome to benefit human health and wellbeing.

We are looking for a creative, highly motivated and adaptable design-led materials specialist with a broad understanding of the role of materials in architectural design and construction, and expertise in material testing and development. Some knowledge or experience of emerging biological materials would be welcome, but is not essential. Working closely with colleagues across the Hub and with industry partners, the successful candidate will consider the limitations of existing construction materials and processes, propose design requirements for new materials, identify opportunities to effectively use new biomaterials in architectural design and construction, create a library of biomaterials and processes, and carry out lab-scale testing of material samples and large-scale testing of prototypes.

The appointee will join one of the UKs leading groups on Biotechnology for the Built Environment and work alongside Designers, Engineers and Biologists.

Along with the standard application documents (including CV and cover letter) potential candidates are asked to provide a portfolio of projects which demonstrate their expertise in materials technology and a broad understanding of the role of materials in architectural design.

The post is full-time and fixed-term for 36 months.
