The NUAcT Fellowship Scheme

NUAcT offers five-year, well-resourced Fellowships which can lead to faculty appointments and we are recruiting 100 new Fellows over the next five years.

Through the NUAcT fellowship scheme, we are looking to recruit a diverse cohort of investigators with the talent and motivation to become future research and academic leaders in their field. As a Fellow at Newcastle University, you will develop your career in an exciting working environment, be provided with a high level of dedicated time for research, have the freedom to develop your research interests and have access to our cutting-edge facilities. We are an anchor institution in a vibrant city and work closely with external partners, conducting research that benefits our region, our country and the world. Our international research is facilitated by having physical bases in four locations (Newcastle, London, Singapore and Malaysia).

EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) is one of the University’s core values: we are committed to providing equality of opportunity to succeed, valuing individual differences and the benefit this brings to the pursuit of academic excellence. We are working towards a fully inclusive University community which recruits and retains staff and students from all sectors of society and provides a positive and supportive culture. Our NUAcT Fellows will not only benefit from this, but will help us deliver a workplace culture in which fairness and equity are valued and where all of our staff and students can thrive.

Who can apply?

We seek applicants who have the potential to develop into independent research investigators. You must have a relevant PhD (or equivalent) and postdoctoral experience, a track record of high quality research, and be aspiring to apply for externally funded fellowships or other major research grant awards. You will also have experience or demonstrable interest in research in an international context relevant to the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment. You will demonstrate an open, collaborative and creative attitude and an ability to contribute to the vibrant culture of the HBBE.

We will appoint five NUAcT Fellows with a background relevant to the main themes of the hub, notably:

· Microbial Environments: Understanding and modifying the microbiome of indoor environments through design of ventilation systems, and the design of materials and surfaces and human interactions with them

· Living Construction: The use of engineered living materials to create new building materials and building processes.

· Building Metabolisms: Developing building systems which metabolise waste or capture energy using cell based processes to generate power and make useful products.

We are looking to build an interdisciplinary team and welcome applications from any discipline which fits with the Hub aims. However, we especially encourage applications from:

· Architects and Designers with experience in Bio-Design with a PhD in emerging technologies, new materials, building systems or microbial environments

· Bio ethicists with a background in relevant Social Science or Philosophy based subject with a PhD in an field related to bioethics or and or the ethics of emerging technologies

· Engineers with experience in electrical engineering, biology, biophysics or computing research with interests in bio-sensors / bio-digital interfaces

· Microbiologists with expertise in the analysis of the microbiome of indoor and urban spaces and the relationships between human activity and the microbiome

It should be noted that there are additional HBBE Followships available in other priority areas at Northumbria University in a wide range of biological fields.
